Staying skilled and open to change in today’s employment market

Florida Today writes in Career centers brace for wave of clients that the end of the space shuttle program could send thousands of aerospace workers into joblessness later this year.  But this isn’t just about one sector’s struggles.  “If we don’t have aerospace workers going to a restaurant, using a dry cleaner or going to the doctor, you see a ripple effect start to happen.”  Career centers offer one-on-one and group help with skills training, career counseling and other support services.  I’m all for getting trained in relevant technology to keep up with the times.  It’s scary when what you’ve always done for a living is no longer viable.  But that means it’s time to move into a new area, time to get trained for the transition.  I wonder what else I would do?

This isn’t the first time I’ve thought about it.  After a car accident in 2000, my hands were down for several months.  That was when I began doing more voice work.  I didn’t know if the hands would come back 100% (they did) but I knew I had to be prepared.  I am the one who creates the income to provide for me.  No one else.  Yes, a lot comes in each month and a lot goes out.  I have bills to pay whether my hands work or not.

And whether my voice works or not.  I use my voice so much that it’s easy for it to get over-used and for me to have to do some voice rest.  That means rescheduling phone sessions and other voice work.  So naturally my thoughts begin to go toward discovering another form of income to replace the voice work if it comes to that. Yes, it’s scary to think what I do for a living may become no longer viable.  But I know that simply means it’s time to move into a new area, and time to get trained for the transition, if I need to.

I have all sorts of skills that could be put to use in ways I can’t even imagine right now.  Like doing the websites,.  I love creating websites for friends and clients, but I don’t want to deal with maintaining anything complex, no audio, video or shopping carts, just a simple information and contact site.  That’s why I do it for just $100.  Do I want to build websites as a new career?  Hmmm, I don’t know, maybe.

I also know that when I am bumped out of one career or one genre and into another, it’s more than just about performing new job duties.  The Universe has arranged it so that I meet the people I meet, that I interact with the people I am placed next to.  So I look forward to the unfolding of that.

And how the Universe arranges that is via law of attraction, placing me among the people with whom I am in vibrational resonance.  And if I find this crowd not to my liking, the remedy is to look for the positive aspects of each situation and each person until I begin to vibrate in a new place, a place away from them and onto somewhere happier. The fastest way to get somewhere other than where I am is to make peace with where I am.  What are the positive aspects about where I am right now? If I perform The Creative Visualization Process, it will help me practice vibing in the new place, instead of fretting about being in that place I’m ready to be free of.  I just need to keep reaching for the better feeling thought.

So when it comes down to it, it’s not about what’s in the news about employment statistics, or the end of the shuttle industry or any other industry, it’s about what we attract, where we resonate, what our attitude and belief is about our hopeful future and the skills we possess.

It comes down to our ability to be flexible and morph and change with the times, and to be willing to acquire new skills as they become relevant to emerging technology.  I believe if I keep my eyes and ears open, I will be led in a specific direction.  And I believe if I keep my thoughts hopeful and my focus on the positive aspects, that where I end up will be a place I like.

For awhile anyway.  Until then, I’m not going anywhere.
