Yesterday the Brevard County, FL School Board voted on an anti-discrimination policy and it passed. BLESSED PROGRESS!! The policy names LGBT students and staff as a new protected class that already exists for minorities and the disabled. The folks in a neighborhood Facebook watch group think having transgender rights means boys will be free to walk into the girls’ bathrooms “any day they decide they identify as a female,” expose themselves and molest their daughters. That’s a crime issue. Criminals will use any excuse to get on a scene to commit a crime. If there’s a crime issue in school bathrooms, address that, remedy that. Discrimination is not the fix. The first fix is educating yourself on the topic.
Some in the group comment that it’s not discrimination to make someone with a penis use the mens’ room and someone without use the womens’ room. Yes it is. The legal definition of Discrimination is “unequal treatment of persons, for a reason which has nothing to do with legal rights or ability. Federal and state laws prohibit discrimination in employment, housing, pay, promotion, education, civil rights, and use of facilities based on race, nationality, creed, color, age, sex or sexual orientation.” It doesn’t matter what you think the law should be or should mean, the law spells it right out for us.
The FB group members post inflammatory comments that show they are missing the entire point. Like the FB crime watch group I got kicked out of Monday, the misunderstanding is a result of lack of education on the topic. Few, if any, read the policy for themselves. Few, if any, who read it understood it. Yet they read someone’s snarky comment and pass it along as if it’s a truth they know for themselves.
Some stated they’d take their kids out of public school and home school them. If so I hope they DO actually homeschool them, as many do not. Otherwise the entire next generation — meaning their kids –are going to have a hard time in this world due to lack of education and lack of understanding what is really going on in life. They are hindering their kids with their own ignorance and they can’t see it. Ignorance just means without knowledge – they just don’t know. They don’t know they are hindering their own children, preventing them from receiving the tools they need to make a better life for themselves than we ever had. I know that’s not their intention, but it will be the end result.
The Native Americans decide whether the decisions they make today would benefit their children seven generations (140 years) into the future. We can begin by educating ourselves on the issues so we don’t waste time arguing over what should be a non-issue.
If you’re pissed off because you think it puts your daughter in harm’s way, that’s a crime issue. Criminals will use any excuse to get on a scene to commit a crime. If there’s a crime issue in school bathrooms, address that, remedy that. Discrimination is not the fix.
I stay in the group since it lets me know who to pray for.
