A self talk script I read over when I need replacement thoughts

This is one of the self talk scripts I read over to remind me of what I know.  I read this whenever I am having continuing thoughts that I want to replace with better feeling thoughts.  This is one set of replacement thoughts I use.  I read it over to myself until I realize that what it says is true.

I know I am in charge of my own wellbeing.

I know that what comes to me is a result of how I think about life and how I react to it. Continue reading

Penn & Teller on Easy Money and Network Marketing

Easy Money

Easy Money

I watched Penn and Teller on Showtime the other night, the 8th season of Penn & Teller: Bullshit! Penn and Teller are notoriously outspoken comedians who crusade to expose the inherent hypocrisy of many popular beliefs and cultural institutions.  In Penn & Teller: Bullshit! Season 8 Episode 5: Everyone wants to get rich quick, but are multi-level marketing schemes really the answer? Penn & Teller reveal the truth about direct-sales companies that market everything from sausages to sex toys.

I learned about network marketing in 1971 when a friend became a recruiter and distributor with Glenn Turner, his Koscot mink oil cosmetic line and his success-motivation course called Dare to Be Great.  I knew 5 co-workers who were selling the same thing, so I figured out that the real product wasn’t skin softener, it was recruitment.  While I agree the Dare to be Great motivation course was inspiring, the ones I knew selling Koscot only listened to the tapes and went to the meetings and paid for workshops in the hopes of networking to sell at the event.  All trying to sell to each other.  But they couldn’t see that.  They’d been mesmerized by the pitch.  It seemed like the whole “motivation course” was just to psych them up about selling the product. They didn’t see that. Ultimately, none of them recouped their investment and most spent a lot of their own money.  I’m glad I got that lesson early. Continue reading

My sleep/work habits are morphing again; using self talk to change my perception

My sleep schedule is changing again and that’s always interesting.  My habit for years was to be up at 4:00am for morning meditation and then go back to bed from about 6:00-9:00am, then go into the office.  The past month I’ve been unable to go back to sleep, and then I crash about 6:00-7:00pm until midnight or 2:00am. That plays havoc with my reading practice,  typically between 10pm and 2am.  Then I stay up until about 6:00pm the next day.  I’ll do what my body wants, however I’m sure having to change my perception of what to do at dawn.  It seems I’m always waiting for daybreak. Lindsay Lohan shocked to be sentenced to jail for violating Court order – the dominoes are falling

I read that Lindsay Lohan was shocked to be sentenced to jail for 90 days for violating her terms of DUI probation for failure to attend weekly alcohol education classes.  She had nine absences.  Her defense attorney argued that Lohan had complied with most of the court’s ordersMOST?? Having worked for criminal defense attorneys for 22 years, on many DUI cases, I can imagine her attorney’s embarrassment at having to make the feeble statement that her client had complied with most of the court’s orders. Lohan feigning surprise at the sentence was a good act.  Her attorney let her know from the beginning what to expect.  Especially if she violated probation.  The attorney let her know in no uncertain terms that she could expect to be sentenced to jail if she did not complete the classes on time. Hummus, Babaganoush and much needed downtime

I’ve had a relaxing, yet busy and productive week.  Last Friday, after I closed on my mortgage refinance, I got a few days off to enjoy the 4th of July weekend and recuperate from the month long fiasco of daily copying of financial documents before I had to begin working on the August issue of Horizons Magazine. I didn’t know until the very day of closing whether I would close at all or not, so when I did, it was a big pressure off me.  I took a few days off to decompress and ended up sleeping a lot.  I also didn’t feel like cooking much and so I made my favorite garlic parsley hummus and some babaganoush and ate it all weekend with pita triangles. When I’m feeling stressed, it relaxes me to cook and I love creating healthy and low fat versions of my favorite foods.  I used to think of hummus and pita as a snack, but now I realize it’s a meal in itself.  I enjoy food so much more since I changed to a healthier diet.  Simpler foods satisfy me and I eat a lot less of them. Why Do I Give Away Free What Others Charge For?

I’ve been asked why I give so much stuff away for free.  Things like free e-books and processes that other people will tell you are free, but are not since you have to give them your email address so they can spam you with their never ending marketing material.  So they can get you to sign up for even more and more stuff until they’ve baffled you into giving out a credit card number.  I’ve had friends who got charged for months, years before they noticed it. That’s what this type of marketer counts on. So I don’t do that.  To me, FREE means no strings.  FREE means you won’t be repeatedly solicited now that they know who you are and where to find you.  FREE means you just give them a link to the gift like I’ve done below. You’re Cut Off: 9 Bratty Women with Bad Attitudes

You’re Cut Off is a VH1 reality show that features nine spoiled 20-something women whose benefactors all decided that in these tough times, enough is enough. It’s high time their princesses learn how to become productive members of society–not a endless drain on their finances.  So when the ladies move into a house for what they think is a reality show called “The Good Life,” they’re actually about to be subjected to their worst nightmare: getting cut off.  Completely cut off.  As in stripped of all their cash and conveniences, and forced to learn how to live life the way normal people do.  They are required to participate and pass an eight week rehabilitation program in order to be taken back. The program director is Laura Baron, a life strategist who helps counsel the women on the road to self-improvement and responsibility. Continue reading
