I’ve got a renewed interest in art and last night pulled out my Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards (a good review of it is here). I haven’t opened it in a decade, but I remembered it gave a good explanation of the mental confusion I feel when looking at my first blank page in months, and how to overcome it. I’ve never taken an art class, and never thought I’d want to paint realism, but I wanted to learn the basics. I love internet search engines! The last time I “studied” art, was with books from the public library, pre-internet days. I quickly found some cool sites online to teach me the basics – for free! – and last night I studied drawing shadows, light and dark values, and one point perspective.
I thought, “art and psychism are similar in that in both you look at the objects in your physical world (people, buildings, trees, cars) a different way than most people do. If I am looking at the scene in front of my eyes from a one point perspective, I am looking to take note of what is above my eye level, and what falls below it. If I am looking at the scene in front of my eyes from an energetic, clairvoyant point of view, I see a highly interactive dance of imagery that I’ve learned gives me information.
In both cases, I am able to receive more information than the average bear, simply because I go into it looking for something. I intend to see what I’m looking for, so I find it. Like now, I’m looking at everything I see to find how the shadows fall around them and from a one point perspective viewpoint. That’s the exercise this week.
What I love about Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is that the author intended that the reader have zero prior drawing skill or experience. That takes the pressure off and makes it easier to learn through proper technique and practice. The same with psychic ability. You need zero prior skill, just daily practice of effective development skills.
