Rest in Peace, Bryan Tilford

Bryan Tilford

Bryan Tilford, Beloved B, you will be missed.

A beloved spiritual brother chose today to drop his Earth robes.  We first met back in the late 80’s when I was at WFIT. The sadness of losing a loved one is made bearable by knowing we left nothing unsaid between us. We’ll meet again, Beloved B.
Rumi says: On the day I die, don’t say he’s gone. Death has nothing to do with going away.  The sun sets, and the moon sets but they’re not gone.  Death is a coming together.  The human seed goes down into the ground like a bucket, and comes up with some unimagined beauty. Your mouth closes here, and immediately opens with a shout of joy there.

I spoke to him just the day before.  He was one friend I could always count on to be awake in the wee hours. We shared many hours in his studio listening to his fascinating creations and seeing how he puts all the pieces together. It was mesmerizing.  Listen to Bryan here http://www.reverbnation.com/ghostbeat/song/6688829-sunset-in-your-hair.

The name Ghostbeat is taken indirectly from the book African Rhythms and African Sensibility by sociologist/master drummer John Miller Chernoff. His intense studies of African music described certain tribe’s belief that all music is a gift from God whose drum provides the pulse of all music. Out of respect, they don’t play over what they call God’s Drum. Paraphrased, it’s Ghostbeat.

Below is a poster I created for his birthday in 2011.

parrot loveRumi says, “A moment of happiness, you and I sitting on the verandah, apparently two, but one in soul, you and I. We feel the flowing water of life here, you and I, with the garden’s beauty and the birds singing. The parrots of heaven will be cracking sugar as we laugh together, you and I. In one form upon this earth, and in another form in a timeless sweet land.”
