Last month, I was contacted by a friend I edit for about an idea she had forming. She remembered we’d had a conversation on the topic once and asked if I could elaborate for her. We chatted a few minutes, she gave me a word count and sent over a portion of her manuscript. As I read over the material, I was reminded that I’d over the past year journalled some private thoughts on the matter. I smiled as I checked the word count and realized she’d essentially be paying me for work I’d already done. At the time, I thought I was journalling private ideas for my future contemplation. I shared it with no one.
As it turns out, I’ve ghost written for associates of hers and our collaborations all began the same way. We’d be having casual conversation on project topics, then the personal stories begin to flow. Since I know it’s all related, I’d make observations about the common thread I’d see and how the personal examples were always relevant to the projects. Many times, I’d journal my notes after a meeting and not until later go back and read them impartially. I’d be surprised what I’d missed in the moment, mostly lessons very much meant for me. Hindsight is 20/20. I laughed as I watched the puzzle pieces tumble into place. I’d already written exactly what she needed. A few hours worth of tweaking and the project could now be complete. She Paypalled payment. Easy, breezy, the Universe likes to please me.
