{"id":5243,"date":"2009-10-10T15:07:17","date_gmt":"2009-10-10T20:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/?p=5243"},"modified":"2009-10-10T15:07:17","modified_gmt":"2009-10-10T20:07:17","slug":"knock-knock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/knock-knock\/","title":{"rendered":"Knock Knock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nktBsI0PYPs\" target=\"_blank\">Knock, Knock is a 2 minute video<\/a> of Daniel Beaty reciting Knock, Knock: \u201cFor the children of fathers who are locked down\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>As a boy, I shared a game with my father.\u00a0 Played it every morning until I was three.\u00a0 He would Knock knock on my door and I pretend to be asleep, until he got right next to the bed then\u00a0 I would get up and\u00a0 jump into his arms \u201cgood morning Poppa\u201d\u00a0 and my poppa&#8211; he would tell me that he loved me.\u00a0 We shared a game&#8212;&#8211; \u201cKnock knock\u201d.\u00a0 Until that day when the knock never came, and\u00a0 my mom takes me on a ride past corn fields on this never ending highway\u2014 until we reached a place of high rusty gates.\u00a0 A confused little boy I enter the building, carried in my momma arms&#8212; \u201cKnock knock\u201d<!--more-->We reach a room of windows and brown faces \u2013 behind one of the windows sits my father.\u00a0 I jump out of my mommas arms and run notoriously toward my poppa &#8212;- only to be confronted by this window.<\/p>\n<p>I knock knock trying to break thru the glass trying to get to my father&#8212;&#8211; I knock knock&#8212; as my mom pulls me away before my poppa\u00a0 could even say one word<\/p>\n<p>And for years he has never said a word&#8212;&#8211; And so 25 years later I write these words &#8212;-for the little boy in me who still awaits his father\u2019s knock<\/p>\n<p>Poppa come home because I miss you\u2026 Miss you waking me up in the morning telling me you love me<\/p>\n<p>Poppa come home because there are some things I don\u2019t know and I thought maybe you could teach me&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>How to shave, how to dribble a ball, how to talk to a lady, how to walk like a man<\/p>\n<p>Poppa come home because I decided awhile back I want to be just like you \u2013&#8211; But I\u2019m forgetting who you are<\/p>\n<p>And 25 years later a little boy cries and so <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>I write these words and try to heal and try to father myself&#8212;- and I dream up a father who says the words my father did not<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><br \/>\nDear Son,\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry I never came home&#8212;-for every lesson I failed to teach&#8212;- hear these words:<\/p>\n<p>Shave in one direction with strong deliberate strokes to avoid irritation<\/p>\n<p>Dribble the page with the brilliance of your ball point pen<\/p>\n<p>Walk like a GOD and your GODDESS will come to you<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><br \/>\nNo longer will I be there to knock on your door, so you must learn to knock for yourself<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Knock knock down doors of racism and poverty that I could not<\/p>\n<p>Knock knock on doors of opportunity for the lost brilliance of the black men who crowd these cells<\/p>\n<p>Knock knock with diligence for the sake of your children<\/p>\n<p>Knock knock for me&#8212;&#8212; for as long as you are free these prison gates can not contain my spirit&#8212; the best of me still lives in you<\/p>\n<p>Knock Knock with the knowledge that you are my son but you are not my choices<\/p>\n<p>YES&#8212;- we are our father\u2019s sons and daughters but we are not their choices<\/p>\n<p>But despite their absence&#8212; we are still here&#8212;&#8211;still alive&#8212;-still breathing\u2014with the power to change this world\u2014one little boy and girl at a time<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nktBsI0PYPs\" target=\"_blank\">Knock, Knock <\/a>who\u2019s there?<\/p>\n<p>WE ARE!<\/p>\n<p>~ Daniel Beaty ###<br \/>\nend<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And 25 years later a little boy cries and so I write these words and try to heal and try to father myself&#8212;- and I dream up a father who says the words my father did not. &#8220;<\/em>That&#8217;s one thing we can all do for ourselves: give ourselves the words, the inner dialogue, the pep talk, the cheerleading that we never got, or that we need now.<em> <\/em>Dream up this person who says the words you need to hear to motivate you to be who you know you can be.\u00a0 Be that person for your friends as well.<\/p>\n<p>Every morning as I lie in bed waking up, I am self-talking myself as though I am my most beloved.\u00a0 I say the things I need to hear.\u00a0 <em>I love you and it makes me happy when you&#8217;re happy.\u00a0 I&#8217;m so proud of you for all you&#8217;re doing.\u00a0 You&#8217;re juggling work and play and finding a balance.
