I kept thinking I could walk it out, but it became worse. I finally thought to Google “pain and inflammation in the back of the leg” and I think what is wrong with my knee is a micro tear in a ligament or pulled hamstring way down near the bottom where it attaches. These guys have it also http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum11/HTML/009238.shtml and also http://www.do-it-yourself-joint-pain-relief.com/pain-in-back-of-knee.html and also http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/sport-injuries/knee-pain/posterior-knee-pain. Most muscle strains or sprains are micro-tears of the tissue, and that takes at least three weeks to heal. The remedy: RICE (raise, ice, compress, elevate). Use a bag of ice or cold pack on your knee four to eight times per day for 20 minutes each time. Good to know.

Wow, I’d only been doing it once a day. I’m slacking. I haven’t been wrapping it either. I had a meniscus tear in my left knee in 1983 so i know it’s not that. From reading the descriptions in the forums, this is the bottom of the hamstring where it hooks on to whatever that calf muscle is called. it could be a micro tear in the ligament but from the ache, I feel it isn’t the meniscus.

From what I read, the remedy for any of it is just to rest and stay off it, elevate it, use some compression and it should take 3 – 12 weeks to heal. A doctor friend said if it isn’t painful to walk on, stay off it and take ibuprofen/Advil for the inflammation.

Ibuprofen made my gums bleed upon waterpiking twice last month when I took it, so I switched to Aleve/Naproxen which didn’t reduce stiffness or ache at all. Swtiched back to ibuprofen and within 20 minutes, ache and stiffness was gone and range of motion restored. I took 1000mg of Vitamin C 1,000mg with it to counter the gums bleed. The knee thang will pass soon enough. But now I know why people with pain rave about ibuprofen. The gums haven’t bled again.

I took it once a day for 9 days. Then I discovered ActiveOn topical topical analgesic which is like ibuprofen you roll on the muscle or joint itself. it’s not ibuprofen but works like it, without going thru the kidneys and liver. I’d use it again. The key to healing the leg was staying off it and keeping it iced. I’ll still be careful with it, but it’s time to get back to walking. No more squats for me. Not for awhile anyway.

10-1-15 Update: Leg is fine again!!
