{"id":8239,"date":"2011-05-30T02:42:59","date_gmt":"2011-05-30T06:42:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/?p=8239"},"modified":"2020-11-30T05:19:54","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T10:19:54","slug":"writers-block-isnt-a-block-at-all-its-a-billboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/writers-block-isnt-a-block-at-all-its-a-billboard\/","title":{"rendered":"Writer&#8217;s Block Isn&#8217;t a Block At All; It&#8217;s a Billboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Last night I spoke to a client who was convinced she had<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Writer%27s_block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writer&#8217;s block<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have you ever had that?\u00a0 I ask because many of you who read this are also writers, even if it&#8217;s just a journal.\u00a0 You suddenly lose interest in putting words on the page, or, more likely, you just aren&#8217;t happy with what you&#8217;re writing.\u00a0 There are a lot of theories on what writer&#8217;s block is and how to overcome it, and a lot of busy work can go into researching it.\u00a0 But I think it&#8217;s just like anything else: the remedy is the most simple answer.\u00a0 <em>Recognize the block itself as a signal to you from the Universe in answer to something you&#8217;ve been asking lately.\u00a0 Break down the elements of the block and you&#8217;ll find it&#8217;s not a block at all, it&#8217;s a billboard with your answer.\u00a0 It&#8217;s your inner guidance talking to you. <\/em><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But you probably don&#8217;t recognize it as inner guidance.\u00a0 You may be so convinced they are your own thoughts, you keep pushing them to the back, waiting for a big beam of light to shine some angel down from the sky to talk to you like they do in the movies.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not how it happens.\u00a0 Well, ok, sometimes it does, but more often, you will receive thoughts and impressions that you may mistake as your own thoughts, rather than considering them a symbol for your contemplation as inner guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How can you tell the difference between your own thoughts and true inner guidance?\u00a0 By making time each day to sit and meditate or otherwise bring your mind to stillness on a regular basis. That will begin to skim the surface thoughts away, the same as clearing your computer cache of temporary files.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t need to drag that old, outdated, temporary information into each new thought session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meditation on a regular basis will train your mind to discern between helpful and trivial thoughts as they appear.\u00a0 When you cultivate a mind that is able to focus undisturbed, there are less layers, less filters between the message inner guidance is sending you, and how you receive it.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be able to more easily tell which thoughts are yours, and which come from inner guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, when you get writer&#8217;s block, how does it show up for you?\u00a0 For my friend, it was as a complete blank when she sat to write.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t even interest her enough to put pen to page.\u00a0 She said she felt like she was in<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suspended_animation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suspended animation<\/a>.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">She just wanted to sit.\u00a0 I thought that in itself was a powerful signal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The difference in feeling<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/?p=4401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overwhelmed into inertia<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the brain wave condition known as<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alpha_wave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the alpha wave state<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">is your perception of what you are experiencing.\u00a0 If you feel mindless, maybe you&#8217;re supposed to be mindless for a little awhile, long enough to gain some balance and perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Exercise the power of your will to make yourself write about this &#8220;writer&#8217;s block&#8221;
