{"id":39706,"date":"2015-02-26T09:36:55","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T14:36:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/?p=39706"},"modified":"2018-03-02T06:58:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-02T11:58:00","slug":"i-live-on-a-non-24-hour-circadian-rhythm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/i-live-on-a-non-24-hour-circadian-rhythm\/","title":{"rendered":"I live on a non-24 hour circadian rhythm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/circadian-chart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-39707\" src=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/circadian-chart-300x92.jpg\" alt=\"circadian chart\" width=\"300\" height=\"92\" srcset=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/circadian-chart-300x92.jpg 300w, http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/circadian-chart.jpg 433w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My brain and body are not on a 24 hour clock.\u00a0 Since I work from home, I can make my own schedule to successfully earn income.\u00a0 My unorthodox schedule, however, definitely impacts my professional obligations and social relationships.\u00a0 I Googled to see what info there was online and learned about<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.non-24.com\/about-non-24.php\">Non-24, which is a circadian rhythm disorder.<\/a>\u00a0 <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-24-hour_sleep%E2%80%93wake_disorder\"> circadian clock modulates many physiological rhythms,\u00a0<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">including sleeping\/waking.\u00a0 Those with non-24 experience sleep disturbance when their circadian rhythms drift out of sync with the social\/solar 24-hour day and they attempt to conform to a conventional schedule. Eventually, their rhythms drift back into normal alignment, and symptoms resolve, only to recur as the clock drifts out of alignment again.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> That sounded like it.\u00a0 I first learned about circadian rhythms when I had a friend who was totally blind. Without sensory input of light, his body could not produce particular chemicals so his sleep was chronically disturbed.\u00a0 So when my own patterns of sleeping and waking began to change, I kind of knew what was happening.\u00a0<\/span> <!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Circadian-Clock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-39726\" src=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Circadian-Clock-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Circadian-Clock from http:\/\/www.outsmarthormones.com\/2011\/03\/30\/biological-clock-affects-health-weight\/\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Circadian-Clock-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Circadian-Clock.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/sessions-with-andrea-2\/\">a busy practice<\/a> and I enjoy my work.\u00a0 I get a lot of work done in a 24 hour period.\u00a0 What works best for me is to let myself sleep and wake whenever it hits me.\u00a0 My biggest stretches of work time are between 9am &#8211; 2pm and 11pm &#8211; 3am.\u00a0 That puts me doing the majority of my sleep between 4:00pm and 10:00pm. Being on a different clock can cause a little anxiety. I find when I have appointments ahead of time, I tend to spend time wondering if I can be awake for it\u00a0 and I can let that little doubt\/fear start stressing me out.\u00a0 When I feel stressed, an inner mechanism kicks in and I feel as sleepy as if I&#8217;d been drugged. It can turn into a real Catch 22: setting alarms to be awake for an event and feeling increasingly sleepily drugged as the time approaches. You gotta laugh!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ve found what works for me is to have as few carved-in-stone advance appointments as possible.\u00a0 I schedule only what&#8217;s crucial: business meetings, car repair, medical, dental.\u00a0 That&#8217;s worked for years.\u00a0 Now I&#8217;m finding I want more social time.\u00a0 I want to make time to hang with friends.\u00a0 My dilemma is friends rightfully want to know in advance when we&#8217;ll get together.\u00a0\u00a0 In the past I&#8217;ve made commitments and too often called at the last minute to cancel as I couldn&#8217;t stay awake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I always let sleep and work take precedence.\u00a0 I consider it a blessing that<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/sessions-with-andrea-2\/\">my work is fun and fulfilling for me<\/a>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I enjoy helping friends navigate their way through what initially seems like an unfriendly world, to finding their place in a world that cooperates with their every thought, expectation and belief.\u00a0 My work is not just a job, it&#8217;s a mission.\u00a0 When I&#8217;ve got a vision, when I have a mission or a goal I am working toward, then it doesn&#8217;t feel like work.\u00a0 I&#8217;m able to do most of my work on the phone and through email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What does this have to do with a non-24 hour circadian rhythm?
