{"id":34890,"date":"2000-01-10T12:37:28","date_gmt":"2000-01-10T17:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/?p=34890"},"modified":"2015-06-03T18:21:08","modified_gmt":"2015-06-03T23:21:08","slug":"i-get-robbed-a-little-the-night-i-was-the-coldest-ive-ever-been","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/i-get-robbed-a-little-the-night-i-was-the-coldest-ive-ever-been\/","title":{"rendered":"I get robbed, a little, the night I was the coldest I&#8217;ve ever been."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brrrrrr. \u00a0I realize how lucky I have it, having grown up in Florida.\u00a0 I can\u2019t imagine what real cold must feel like.\u00a0 The coldest I\u2019ve ever been is back in January 2000. \u00a0I\u2019d driven all day to arrive after dark at a home I had in Murphy, NC and when I arrived, it was 15 degrees and snowflakey.\u00a0 I\u2019d picked up groceries in Elijay, GA\u00a0on my way in.\u00a0\u00a0I thought how good a hot shower would feel, and I would heat soup on the stove and\u00a0the heater would be going by the time I got out of the shower.\u00a0 I came in and went right to the kitchen to set groceries down and get my soup going.\u00a0 I found I had no water!\u00a0 I went into the bathroom and tried that faucet, no water.\u00a0 So much for a shower, much less a hot one.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>So I start my soup and notice my big cast iron frying pan is not on the stove.\u00a0 Now why would I have moved that somewhere else?\u00a0 Then I go to turn the oil heater on and notice it is missing.\u00a0 Taken completely out of the wall.\u00a0 I go into the living room and see\u00a0my computer and printer and fax still there.\u00a0 Even on my sacred altar, the jade prayer beads were still there.\u00a0 I had several items on the altar that would just look like jewelry to someone, yet none of it was touched.\u00a0 As far as I could tell, only the heater and the frying pan were missing.\u00a0 I went to the back door and could tell that is where they broke in, and they had cut themselves badly on the jalousie glass.<\/p>\n<p>It was about 7:00 pm when I made a call and\u00a0the Cherokee County officer came out to take a report.\u00a0 He was a young handsome kid.\u00a0 I told him about the water and we walked out to my well and he did some fishing around and told me they took my water pump.\u00a0 I thought that was interesting.\u00a0 Someone breaks in to my place and takes only a heater, a water pump and a cast iron frypan.\u00a0\u00a0They\u00a0didn\u2019t even damage the door, except for a few broken\u00a0jalousies on the back porch.\u00a0 I thought, these were just people who needed to stay warm and have water.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t be mad and I didn\u2019t feel afraid.\u00a0 I did have a wall heater in my bedroom and I was comfortable\u00a0that night by sleeping in my sweats, socks and knit cap, wrapped in 2 blankets, on the floor of my bedroom a few feet away from the wall heater.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning, I went out to my van to drive to McDonald\u2019s (I thought) and found an inch thick layer of ice on the windshield.\u00a0 I thought, hmmm, so that\u2019s what ice scrapers are for\u2026\u00a0 well I\u2019ll just run the hose over it, but remembered I had no water.\u00a0 BUT I did have my bottle of water in the van and I\u2019ll just pour that on the windshield.\u00a0 But it was frozen solid!\u00a0 What????\u00a0 I\u2019m a Florida gal.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never seen that, ever.\u00a0 Then I had the mental flash that my van may not be set up to run when it is this cold, so I just went inside and waited for the day to warm up.\u00a0 I later called my aunt who lived 7 miles away, and she said it was a good idea not to try to start the car until it had warmed up.\u00a0 So that night was the coldest I\u2019ve ever been. It made me feel compassion for those who have to live without heat altogether, maybe like the ones who stole my heater and water pump. \u00a0I likes the idea they took the cast iron frypan also. These were just people down on their luck.
