{"id":10286,"date":"2010-09-03T00:58:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-03T00:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/?p=10286"},"modified":"2014-01-23T14:36:32","modified_gmt":"2014-01-23T19:36:32","slug":"as-a-yogi-yoga-is-my-lifestyle-not-an-exercise-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/horizonsmagazine.com\/blog\/as-a-yogi-yoga-is-my-lifestyle-not-an-exercise-class\/","title":{"rendered":"As a Yogi, Yoga is my Lifestyle, not an Exercise Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Facebook friend wrote the other day.\u00a0 In my profile, I say I am a yogi and he wanted to know what kind of yoga I practiced since he was newly interested in it.\u00a0 I replied to him:\u00a0 &#8220;Hello, in years past I went through all <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoga\" target=\"_blank\">the forms of yoga<\/a>: raj yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga, kriya yoga, karma yoga and studied many texts by many other yogis.\u00a0 That was in the 1970&#8217;s when there were not many books on the subject, but the books that were available were powerful.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=7420tkAw5UMC&amp;dq=Paul+Brunton%27s+Search+in+Secret+Egypt&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=bn&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=6mB_TKX2GcH7lwexr9zzDg&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=4&amp;ved=0CCMQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Brunton&#8217;s Search in Secret Egypt <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Brunton\" target=\"_blank\">Search in Secret India<\/a> were early favorites.\u00a0 Now there are many writers and a few really good books.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crystalclarity.com\/yogananda\/contents.html\" target=\"_blank\">Autobiography of a Yogi<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yogananda-srf.org\/tmp\/py_notitle.aspx?id=44\" target=\"_blank\">Paramahansa Yogananda<\/a> was the first text I read of that sort, and it awakened my consciousness and led me to read other books.\u00a0 So much is available to read for free online.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t now name or label the type of yoga I do.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t do any of the newly trademarked names of hatha yoga styles.\u00a0 I do hatha yoga twice a day, and do a class now and again.\u00a0 I did regular classes at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yogashakti.org\" target=\"_blank\">Yoga Shakti Mission<\/a> and other ashrams for several years.\u00a0 I recommend doing some classes and you&#8217;ll run across either a teacher that clicks, or other students that turn you onto different books and classes and information.<\/p>\n<p>For me as a yogi, yoga is a lifestyle.\u00a0 I feel a union with everything around me.\u00a0 That includes not just people and animals but plants and minerals and the car I drive and the door I open and the shoes I wear and the house I live in.\u00a0 I recognize in my interaction with these items that they have a life of their own and more importantly, they all want to please me.<\/p>\n<p>The flower wants to bloom in the courtyard and the squirrel wants to delight me with his antics and even the sunshine comes out just for me.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t just entertainment, it is evidence that what I think about and how I feel about what is around me affects how I experience it.<\/p>\n<p>That means my thoughts are affecting the molecules of the things around me.\u00a0 That means I can direct my thoughts so that I can have maximum enjoyment and personal fulfillment in my life.\u00a0 When I&#8217;m having a good life, I attract more people who have a good life and more sign posts directing me further on my path.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Keep me posted!&#8221;
