Comment on What specifically did we lose or gain in this election? by Andrea

A friend emailed me this comment:
I saw your request on your blog to interpret the election results. For what it’s worth I will give you my two cents. First I would like to comment on your blog post on not voting Republican because I remember. To me this seemed more like using your vote to try and get revenge for past political policies. For me a better use of your vote would be to convey your political policy beliefs for the present and future to our elected officials.

In my opinion this is what happened in creating the election results. The American people sent a message to Washington regarding what political policies and issues that they want to have addressed. Namely, the economy, unemployment, government spending, national deficit, national debt, etc. The voters had a different vision of the future they wanted to create then what the current elected officials had. Thus the shift in creative energy.

With all that said, what do I think we can expect in the future? I think that we can expect our country’s financial and economic issues to take top priority. I think that we can expect most, if not all, of the Bush tax cuts to be extended. So your federal income taxes should remain about the same. I am not certain if this is sound policy or not. In some ways I think that the current tax rates are too low. Then again, increasing taxes will not help to improve the economy. Personally, I think that the tax system should be revised to increase the base of taxpayers. I have read many articles that have said that about 47% don’t pay any income tax. When you adjust that for the current unemployment rate it leaves about 37% not paying tax. In my opinion we need to figure out how to get these people to pay their fair share even if it is minimum flat fee.

I also think that there will be legislative attempts to boost the economy and reduce unemployment. If successful you should enjoy enhanced prosperity. However, it remains to be seen what strategies will be used to try and accomplish this. My personal opinion is that the Federal government cannot effectively spend its way to prosperity for the country. This was first tried with FDR’s New Deal, and it didn’t work. Eight years after the New Deal was passed the country was still in the Depression and the unemployment rate had not changed. Every subsequent attempt by the federal government to spend its way to prosperity has generated the same results. As far as efficiency goes, the current federal stimulus plan is credited with saving or creating 3.3 million jobs. The bill to the taxpayers for these results is about $246,000 per job saved or created. I think that there are better and more efficient ways to create jobs.

To create jobs and improve the economy I do think that the Federal government can use legislation and political policies to create a favorable environment for businesses of all sizes to thrive and thus creating prosperity for the country. To determine which policies work I would suggest identifying periods in our country’s history where we experienced great prosperity and see what political policies were in place. Perhaps these policies can be used today to create prosperity.

For me the most important thing that we can expect based on the election results is that both the Democrats and Republicans are going to have to learn to work together to get things done. I kind of like the balance of power being more evenly split for this reason. I also think that our president will have to become more moderate in his thinking and policies in order to foster positive change for our country. I hope that he is successful in this.

In closing I would like to say that only time will tell how the results of this election will affect each of us personally.

P.S. I would like to say that I am independent and not registered with any political party. I vote for the person who best represents my beliefs. For the record, I did vote Democratic in the 08 election based on the intention they had for positive change.

I love the positive spin on this episode. It sure seems like typical Mercury retrograde. We have to laugh at it!!!

I never thought of life this way. What a way to live! Very inspirational. I've never lived alone having gone from my mother's house to my husband's. When I was in my 30s I wondered what it would be like to live alone. I still do but ... Yes you can hear some fear here.. That is so cool you have experienced both sides and have this wonderful relationship with everything now. It is so true isn't it.

When is your book coming out?

Wayne, thanks for the comments. I'm reading your Fading To Enlightenment again since I've discovered your blog. I have new appreciation for the book. Each page is a meditation in itself: simple yet deeply symbolic photos alongside a brief personal note and relevant insight. Lovely.

Though I have often commented at spiritual gatherings - after the lecture, during the socializing - that, though we often have very different views and beliefs, what practically all spiritual seekers have in common is their sense of "differentness" among family and the general population. We all have that in common.

You make a very good point, Andrea, something I haven't thought about before. The aloneness time which goes along with "being different" - something some of us fight, others accept - does indeed act as a catalyst to both spiritual growth and insights. I know I would never have discovered and nurtured many of my personal and cherished qualities without that "aloneness" time.

Hopefully, your other readers have discovered this benefit themselves and no longer shy away from the isolation.

Thanks for pointing this out, Andrea.
