August 1997

Hello and welcome to the August issue of Horizons Magazine! Once again it's been a busy month and I've had lots of fun putting together this edition for you. In July, I spent 5 days down in the Keys just kind of floating around in the sandy-bottomed shallows while my braver, more curious partner snorkeled about 1/4 mile offshore where the grass and reefs hid lots of fish, sea fans, sand dollars and underwater treasures galore. It was a fun and relaxing time, and we actually got lots of work done also! So, arriving home rested and refreshed, it was a pleasure to pick out all the best articles and put them together to share with you here.

Don't miss Emmett Miller 8/22 in Melbourne.  We're getting a lot of interesting things going on in the calendar, and I'm plan to go to a lot of them, especially Emmett Miller on August 22 in Melbourne. He's an amazing pioneer of mind/body medicine and I have many of his audiotapes as well as his new book, Deep Healing. This talk is FREE. See his article on page 25.

Universal Lightworkers' Conference is coming.  On October 10-12 Horizons Magazine will be co-sponsoring The Universal Lightworkers Conference at the West Palm Beach Sheraton; this is a national show and will be featuring such well known authors and speakers as Alan Cohen (see page 17,) Dr. Doreen Virtue (see page 8,) Jon Marc Hammer, Jani King (P'taah) and more. See their ad on page 21, and if you're a metaphysical storeowner or practitioner, you'll probably want a booth for the weekend to let people know who you are, so call them for vending info. I'll see you there!

A word on love offerings.  I see in our calendar that many teachers, rather than charging a fee, ask for a donation or love offering only and leave it up to the attendee to decide what the class was worth to them. Remember in these cases to be responsible and generous. You know if you're being fair or not and an extra $5 goes a long way. Consider it an investment in your continued good fortune.

Walk-ins welcome.  While I'm telling class-goers to be responsible, let me speak for a moment to teachers and workshop leaders about those 3 dreaded words, Advance Registration Required! The reason for this, I've found, is that many will only hold the class if they get enough people to attend to make it worthwhile their time financially. This is one example of where we hold our abundance away from us, by having the kind of consciousness that says, “Well, I won't share my knowledge with others unless I can make a buck on it at the same time.” You'll draw more abundance your way with a consciousness that says, “I love teaching my subject so much that I'm going to show up and give my best workshop, even if the only person attending is the best friend who owed me a favor.”

If you want to be heard, start talking.  Teachers, if you're dedicated to enlightening and uplifting others, you'll naturally draw others to you as soon as you start doing your “work,” even if in the beginning it costs you a little time and money to get your message out.

Stop Taking Score so Soon.  We all take score way too soon. Remember when George Carlin joked about being asked if he had any spare change and he replied, “I don't know yet, I'm only 35.” Many of us spend time being aggravated that we haven't Made It Yet and continually lament to friends that if only we didn't have to do our day job then we could get on with our Real Work. Well, folks, your Real Work is probably in learning how to get along with the co-workers at your day job, or your partner, or your family, or your neighbors, so stop complaining, figure that out and get on with it. Stop taking score every day. Think of where you were 6 years ago and how far you've come. Look at it in the long run and you've made amazing progress!

Let's talk about responsibility.  It's so easy for us to blame others when we can't get our act together, and to take advantage of beloved friends and family while we're all wrapped up in selfishness. Stop and ask yourself: Who am I responsible for? (Yourself, your parents, your children?) Who are you responsible for housing and feeding? Are you doing that yourself or are you imposing on another to handle that for you? Do you justify it by saying, “Well, Granny (or Sis) loves being with the children, she loves cooking for them.”

Well, I'm sure she does, and I hope she's well paid for doing it - uh, you DO pay her for every hour she has them, don't you? There's a fine line between, “oh, can you watch the kids for an hour,” and dumping them with someone 7 days and nights in a row where they've got to feed your 2 in addition to their own 2, which adds up to a lot of noise, a lot of cooking, a lot of dishes and very little understanding on your part if you're contributing to this scenario. So wake up and smell the coffee, then send Granny (or Sis) a dozen roses with a giant Thanks, and act more responsibly from now on. Like don't charge the roses to her Visa.

Horizons Meditation/Discussion Series
On Tuesday, September 9, we'll begin the monthly Meditation/Discussion Series in south Brevard County and it'll be a fun, informative evening of friendship and sharing. We'll have a topic in mind and show a favorite video - we've got a great collection - discuss the ideas presented, then close with a guided meditation and have some light refreshments.
