OCTOBER 2005
Our beliefs alter our genetic code. We just missed Hurricane Katrina. Why does God allow death and suffering? The end of death as we know it (as reported by those who have made the transition).

Hello and welcome to the October 2005 issue of Horizons Magazine.

As Hurricane Katrina made its way up the coast of Florida last month, I was in Clearwater Beach with Gregg Braden and Bruce Lipton. Dr. Lipton is a cell biologist and author of the acclaimed Biology Of Belief, Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles. His experiments, examining the molecular mechanisms by which cells process information, have revealed that to control our behavior, genes are turned on and off by influences outside the cell. These influences include our perceptions and beliefs. He shows that our beliefs, true or false, positive or negative, affect genetic activity and actually alter our genetic code. He maintains we can retrain our consciousness to create healthy beliefs, and by doing so create a profoundly positive effect on our bodies and our lives. We can identify where our glitches are and not only regulate our own brain chemistry to overcome ailments, we can reprogram ourselves and reformat our lives.

Our body is a community of over 50 trillion living cells, all cooperating as a collective amoebic consciousness, and we're speaking to it and directing it every time we have a thought or reaction. The body is a biochemical machine and the driver is the mind. Our cells convert the world around us to sensation that we can then read and interpret. Lipton likens the cell membrane to a computer. The nucleus of the cell is the hard drive. The keyboard is the receptors and via it your environment programs your computer. Two jobs of the cells are growth and protection, so at all times we are either using our personal energy, our chi, for growth or protection. When we're under stress, we aren't growing because our cells are busy protecting us. So dis-ease is merely a result of how we're driving our physiology.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, we might be more stressed and a little more likely to be keeping our cells in "protection mode" right now, which is fine if we are in perfect health. However, if there are any health issues passing through your body, this would be a good time to be more mindful of what thoughts and reactions you are having and take steps to relieve stress and stay upbeat. It's inspiring how many have responded to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the massive private financial aid as a result of it. Yes, we can criticize those in power, but the bottom line is that private individuals responded and picked up the slack. The people took the matter into their own hands and did what had to be done.

As Marc Allen says, "Cut the sh*t and do the thing." And they did it.. Let's have a big hand for private citizens who didn't sit around whining about waiting for the government to take care of it.
People ask why God allows death and suffering. I personally believe that since we're all going to die anyway, over and over, lifetime after lifetime, it doesn't make much difference how it happens. I believe that when we suffer, it gives those around us the opportunity to exercise their own spiritual gifts, to show compassion and offer help.

Seeing our pain makes them dig deep down and discover more of what is inside themselves and consider more of what they are capable of. Look at the millions of dollars and tons of supplies donated on behalf of those displaced by Katrina, much by those who didn't know they had it in them.

I've had so many requests via email the past 3 weeks for an article I previously wrote on death that I am reprinting it here.  Follow this link:
